Yury Maisevich, the Head Coach of the Belarus National Athletics Team, is under investigation by the International Integrity Unit of World Athletics for his involvement in the forced expulsion of athlete Kristina Timanovskaya from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Mr. Maisevich is accused of intimidating and pressuring Ms. Timanovskaya, discriminating against her, and attempting to forcibly return her to Belarus where she feared for her safety.
Ms. Timanovskaya had publicly criticized the National Olympic Committee of Belarus on social media. After her criticism, she was forcibly taken to Tokyo's Haneda Airport by Belarusian officials, including Mr. Maisevich, with the intention of returning her to Belarus against her will. Ms. Timanovskaya refused to board the flight and sought protection from the Japanese authorities, who granted her a humanitarian visa.
Mr. Maisevich's conduct towards Ms. Timanovskaya has been widely condemned by the international community, with many calling for him to be held accountable for his actions.
